The Voodoo Killings A Kincaid Strange Novel Kincaid Strange Series The Kristi Charish Books

This is one of the best books that you’ve never heard of. I hadn’t heard a peep about this book, and I follow a lot of book blogs, bookstagrams, and publishers. But then a new friend of mine posted, on Facebook, that she had read it and enjoyed it. I wanted a physical copy, not a Kindle copy, and it was really hard to find! I live in Western NY and finally found a copy from a seller in Canada. It took over 2 weeks to arrive and by the time it came I had kind of forgotten I’d ordered it. So it was a nice little surprise!
This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I liked the world, and the characters are well developed. The plot itself reads a lot like a “who-dun-it”, and I really had no idea until the very end who the bad guy really was. I read a lot of zombie novels, and this is not your normal zombie novel. Voodoo Killings is a fun, fast-paced romp through a paranormal world full of strange and wonderful things. I highly recommend fans of urban fantasy give the novels of Kristi Charish a try. I can’t wait for the next book about Kincaid Strange!

The Voodoo Killings A Kincaid Strange Novel Kincaid Strange Series The Kristi Charish Books Reviews

I was not sure what I was going to find here but I stumbled up on the synopsis for the next book in this series Lipstick Voodoo and it appealed to me BUT I am kinda OCD about reading books in a series out of order so I grabbed this one since it is book 1 and I am SO glad I did.

Kincaid is a "practitioner" which in the version of our present day world is something akin to a cross of voodoo and necromancer which allows her to help law enforcement in the past but a new Captain thinks that is corrupting his dept a bit so he has fired any practitioners from their jobs as consultants which is where we begin. She has to do small stuff with the help of her best friend who happens to be a ghost of a dead grunge rock star who I always visualized as Kurt Cobain when I was reading this story.

As you can see from the title there are some killings, some other crimes and a huge mystery, the story is addicting and I could hardly put it down. I should warn you that I am not sure if I just liked the book so much or if she really did a lot of TSTL things (which usually turns me off in a book) but the way they worked out it was entertaining and added another layer of interest trying to figure out if one of the characters is evil, good, or just so self-absorbed neither label fits.

So without really telling you much because even a little more would be a spoiler, get this book, you will not be sorry. The only bad thing about this book was the price but it was worth it.
The Voodoo Killings marks the start of another fantastic series from Kristi Charish – a ghost story with a twist, and a voodoo tale with far more depth than even a fan of her work might expect. Strange is a very different sort of heroine than Owl, more likable in personality and more deliberate in her planning, but still just as compelling.

Where the book really began to win me over, though, was with our first trip into Seattle’s Underground City – and not the one tourists get to explore. There’s some real world building here, establishing it’s paranormal place in the world, while still tying it to the history of Seattle. This is a world where ghosts and zombies are real, and where a different sort of Voodoo allows the mortal world to intersect with the supernatural. On that note, this is not your grandmother’s Voodoo, and while I’m sure there are some readers who make take issue with the appropriation of a culture/faith, I really like what she did with it here.

Of course, characters and setting are only part of what makes a good book work so well. Fortunately, the central mystery here is legitimately compelling, and genuinely exciting. It’s a testament to the narrative strengths of Charish that she’s able to so casually walk the reader through a zombie’s mystical bindings, and point out how unusual they are, and make us care about it. I was hooked early one, and wanted to know what the heck was going on. Once the issue of mass murders enters into the equation, it just gets even more interesting.

The Voodoo Killings is a fast paced paranormal adventure that somehow also manages to feel down-to-earth. Even with all the supernatural trappings, it’s still a story to which the reader can easily relate. Yes, it’s violent and gory, complete with chilled goblets of mashed brains, but never so over-the-top that you have trouble suspending disbelief. It’s also an exceptionally well-written tale, demonstrating the further refinement of Charish’s unique voice.
Very exciting! Cant wait for the next book!
Everyone who enjoys sci-fi books needs to try this author. I've read all three of her books and loved them all. This book she creates a world of ghosts and zombies that is creative and thoroughly imagined with lots of action and great characters. Kincaid Strange is a loose cannon, fast talking, and doesn't always think her actions through. I was so sad when I finished, at least a new Owl book comes next month.
I'm giving this book 3 1/2 stars. The book starts off really slow and confusing. This was so slow and boring at first that it took me over a month to pick the book back up. I would say if you can stick with the book through more the first 100-150 pages then it gets better. This book is not what I expected but did turn out to be descent. This book is hard to describe but its a different spine on Zombies.
