For the most part, I really enjoyed this book! Didn't realize it was a take on Sleeping Beauty until about half-way through, but the author did a good job of making the story her own.The overall message of this book is forgiveness. I felt it was a bit heavy-handed towards the end (especially when the Saints appeared) but for children, it's a great message.
Some parts got a bit boring, manly whenever Sand would get really into mending and all the blacksmith stuff was explained in detail. I have zero interest in that sort of thing, so it slowed things downs for me. Overall though, I definitely recommend this. Especially for kids. It's a good story with an excellent message.

An enjoyable and quick read. This could become a standard among a new generation of fairy tales. I highly recommend this for anyone.
Another spellbinding tale from Merrie Haskell. If you haven't read her other books, get them all and spend a weekend wrapped up in another world.
Super interesting and loved the character development will recommend to ,y book club
A story of seeing your choices and making them. Different that many choices we see made in books and movies today.
This is a wonderful tale about friendship and forgiveness. The plot was imaginative and fun. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves twists on favorite fairy tales.
The Castle Behind Thorns is packed with mystery, danger and magic, but ALSO friendship, craftsmanship and learning.
I loved the main characters. They struggle and think deeply, and they each have their own interests and faults. It's really interesting that Sand wants to be a blacksmith. He loves making and fixing things. He is also great at looking a problem in the face and doing his best to try to fix it.
Learning about Perrotte's character is a highlight of the book. It's complicated, imaginative and compelling.
I think The Castle Behind Thorns is a satisfying adventure, and it has a ton of great themes for young minds to ponder. The story is exciting enough to capture a young person's imagination, AND it full of enough layers that it can appeal to people older than the target audience.
I plan to re-read this book, because the story is worth savoring.
This book started in a way that was intriguing -- an amnesiac hero! It's also a classic hook for middle grade children when they're reading, one that I remember working well when I was that age.
Sand, a want to be blacksmith, wakes up knowing very little about where he is and why he's there. He quickly ascertains that he is in a nearby castle but he has no idea why. As he tries to make guesses about what has happened, he also tries to prevent his death by starvation or dehydration, and the reader also gets the chance to learn his history and story. Perrotte, a dead heir to the castle, is quickly introduced to the story as both a foil and a friend and she plays that part nicely. Their friendship develops in a satisfying manner that makes their predicament almost a positive. I enjoyed the description of their days fixing the castle together.
After a bit of time, however, the story begins to move more quickly towards a resolution of their problem. In fact, the only problem I really had with this story was how quickly the (satisfying) ending seemed to flow compared to the beginning. Sand's character (and Perrotte's) are more fully explored, both their good points and their quite deep flaws. I was fascinated by their histories and what had happened to them. I almost felt it was too dark for a middle grade book before remembering that I had read many dark books at that age.
Either way, good book. I'll check out more from this author!!
